About

What do you want to know?

My name is Stephen Mizell, and this is my home on the internet. I was born and raised by a great family in the small town of Metropolis, IL, which is the home of my friend and yours, Superman. After high school, I ran off to college at Murray State University where I majored in Telecommunications Systems Management and graduated in December of 2005. I assisted in managing a law firm right out of college, but later left that job for my current job working at Murray State University in the KATE department.

Faith

I was born into a great Christian family who raised my brother and me to know and love the Lord. I became a Christian, by the grace of God, when I was 7 years old, and now live in His care and mercy. Only through the life and death of Jesus Christ can I stand before a just and holy God and receive eternal life. Because of this, I owe everything I have to God for the salvation He has given me. My primary goal in life is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

Theologically speaking, I am thoroughly reformed, believing in the doctrine of grace and the sovereignty of God in salvation, commonly called Calvinism. I feel it's the duty of every Christian to seek to know God more fully and more completely, so if anyone has any books or sermons to recommend, let me know!

Interests

My list of interests goes on for days. For sports, I enjoy basketball, golf, baseball, volleyball, football, running, ping pong, tennis, bowling, swimming, frisbee golf, and pool. Other leisures include reading, working on computers, spending time with friends and family, riding my motorcycle, playing the guitar, and playing online, useless flash games. Other than those things, I live a pretty simple life.

This Site

This site has went through more changes than I can count. I first hand-built this site using Ruby on Rails with no way to make posts or add pages (except using phpMyAdmin). I then decided to go back to my first love PHP and create my own framework and use it to build another custom site. This turned out to be a poor idea, mainly because it still didn't have a way for me to manage the content and was full of security problems.

After getting fed up with that coding blunder, I resurrected the Rails site I built and added a way to manage the posts and comments on the site. This was fun for a while until the spammers came into town and ruined all the fun. I got tired of deleting comments so I went to a prebuilt blog package called SimpleLog, which I really enjoyed and highly recommend. I decided it was time to spread my coding wings and fly again, so I built another homegrown blog system using Django. It's been great ever since.

What did I used to build the site?

  • Coded in Django
  • Stored in MySQL
  • Shaped with Textmate and Notepad++
  • Uploaded with Transmit and WinSCP
  • Served up by Lighttpd
  • Hosted by Textdrive

Thanks.
